TAKE a peek at Singapore during colonial times - when the tallest building near the Singapore River was St Andrew's Cathedral, and when Dhoby Ghaut was known for the dhobies (laundry men) - at a new exhibition.

The exhibition, The Originals of G. R. Lambert, will be held at the Singapore Philatelic Museum from Aug 2 this year to Jan 2 next year.

It will showcase 32 original photographs and 59 picture postcards made between 1877 and 1918 by German photographer G. R. Lambert.

He was one of the first commercial photographers to set up shop here in the 1880s.

He was highly sought after not only in Singapore, but also in neighbouring territories such as Malaya, Borneo and Sumatra.

His firm, G. R. Lambert and Company, was shut down when World War I began.

The exhibited photos and postcards are part of a collection worth over $120,000. It was donated last year to the museum by the National Art Gallery's chairman, Mr Koh Seow Chuan.

The rest of the collection features postcards of Singapore produced in the 1970s, and will be exhibited and used for educational purposes in the future.

Mr Koh, 70, amassed these works over 40 years while travelling to countries like England, Germany, France and Holland.

He is also an avid philatelist. He donated his collection as he believes the photos and postcards will educate visitors and provide them with a visual feast.

"Pictures speak a thousand words," he said. "People will know what Singapore was like only when they see the images."

The museum's curator, Ms Lucille Yap, 49, said the exhibition will be an eye-opener as even older Singaporeans may not have seen these images of Singapore before.

"People will look at the Cavenagh Bridge more carefully, once they know how long it has been around," she said.

The bridge, located in front of the Fullerton Hotel, was opened in 1870.

The museum, located at the junction of Coleman Street and Armenian Street, aims to draw 50,000 visitors to the exhibition. Entry will cost an adult $5, but admission is free for Singaporean students and citizens aged above 60.

Admission will also be free for all on National Day. For more information, visit www.spm.org.sg
